Wearable computers are designed for intensive order picking operations where items are picked at carton and single unit level. Scanning a barcode is as simple as pressing the trigger attached to the operator's index finger. The scanned barcode is then transmitted via cable or Bluetooth to an portable computer, and in turn to the accounting or WMS system.

The computer itself is lightweight and is worn on the arm or waist to provide total freedom of movement. The LXE HX2 includes a numeric keyboard for data entry (e.g quantities) and features a landscaped 320x240 pixel touch screen. The in-built speaker allows for error tones to be easily heard above the ambient warehouse noise.
Wearable computing delivers faster, more accurate picking because the operator does not have to juggle cartons in addition to a mobile computer or clipboard.

Wearable computers are selected for warehouse use when:
  • The operator is picking for extended periods of time;
  • Items are picked at carton level ; or
  • Many small items are picked from bins (for example: DVD/CD(s), cosmetics, jewellery or liquor)

Wearable ring scanners are also available separately, and can be integrated into any existing Bluetooth-enabled PDA or PC.

Wearable computers are available from LXE (HX2) and Motorola/Symbol (WT4000).
